Sydney Ruble:

A new semester means a new recruitment theme, and I could not have been more excited to incorporate my favorite TV series, Friends, into this one. We chose to promote our value of family through the Friends Theme song. “We’ll be there for you, ’cause you’re there for us too” is more than just a slogan for us. As an organization, we truly live by this catch-phrase. Whether someone needs a calculator before an exam, professional advice, or even just someone to grab lunch with, we can rely on our brothers to be there for us.

Planning recruitment for an entire fraternity was a lot of work, but incredibly rewarding. I learned the ins and outs of how to successfully organize and plan a series of events to portray who we are as a professional business fraternity. We started off recruitment with an informational session where the recruits had the opportunity to meet our brothers and learn about us. This event was extremely important to me whenever I chose to participate in recruitment the first semester of my freshman year. I was able to see how the brothers interacted and make connections with them. I felt as if I was welcomed and included from the very beginning. It was important for me to recreate this environment, and to ensure that I was able to effectively communicate our value of being there for each other like one big family.

Following the info session, we had round table discussions at our ‘Meet the Brothers’ event. After a few ice breaker questions, both the potential new members and the brothers were able to open up to each other in a relaxed setting. It is extremely beneficial to have the opportunity to speak about personal interests and goals. This allows for everyone to really get to know each other.
Every year we hold both a community service and a professional recruitment event. Through these events, we are able to communicate what we do as a Pitt Business organization. This year we made Halloween cards for kids at UPMC’s children’s hospital. We also brought in UPMC recruiters to speak to our organization and our potential new members about opportunities that their companies have for students. Through our UPMC event, we were able to show a small part of the professional development aspects that we encompass as a professional business fraternity.
Overall, I believe that recruitment this semester was a huge success. The theme fits our personality as an organization, everyone was excited to participate and be involved in the process, and we were able to find some amazing new additions to our fraternity.
